Firearms and military material

The rules for using firearms when filming in Spain are stipulated in the Weapons Regulation, passed in 1993, and in particular in article 153 thereof, amended in November 2020 (Spanish Official Gazette [BOE]-A-2020-9134).

“During historical re-enactments, public spectacles, filming and other dramatic arts, only the following may be used: alarm and signal guns, acoustic and blank-firing guns and disabled guns as well as collector’s gunpowder arms without a projectile with the corresponding proof marks or certificates from the official proof house.”

In Spain there are a number of companies that specialise in providing prop and dummy firearms to simulate real fire to guarantee risk-free filming. Spain has a long-standing tradition in special effect firms with proven expertise in creating fire, pyrotechnic-driven effects or explosions, employing the necessary safety elements, as well as in transporting and storing these products. You will also find professional stunt performers that carry out action sequences. All these companies have been officially approved and are authorised to use these items. Permission must be applied for each shooting at the local civil guard or autonomous police force station, depending on the territory where filming is taking place.

Firearms and other explosive materials for use filming can be obtained from the territorial delegations of the Spanish National Police Force or the Civil Guard.

Spain Film Commission network offices can provide contact details to help you locate companies and professionals, as well as obtain the corresponding authorisations.
